WELCOME!

I am author of twenty-five books for young readers, including history, biography, fiction, easy-to-reads, and historical fiction.

Writing for young readers is the most joyful and challenging work I have ever done. In fiction it is rewarding to find that I can draw readers into caring about my characters and connecting with what they are experiencing and feeling. I enjoy researching and writing nonfiction because when something particularly interests me, such as an historical event or a person's biography, I have a strong urge to share the story.

I believe that we make important connections with each other by relating and sharing our feelings and emotions. I like to say that I write from my heart.

I have been fortunate enough to have received awards for several titles, including:
Christopher Columbus: Voyager to the Unknown
She's Been Working on the Railroad
Chuck Yeager: The Man Who Broke the Sound Barrier
I Lift My Lamp: Emma Lazarus and the Statue of Liberty
Magellan and the First Voyage Around the World

Easy-to-read books of mine which have received acclaim are three historical fiction published by HarperCollins as part of their "I Can Read" series:
  Clara and the Bookwagon
  Snowshoe Thompson
  Prairie Friends

Holiday House has published the following of my books as part of their Science Easy-Readers:
Death Valley: A Day in the Desert
  North Pole/South Pole
  Old-Time Cars (forthcoming)

I have also had stories and articles appear in magazines, such as American Heritage, American Girl, Seventeen, Highlights, and School Library Journal. I am a regular contributor to the Los Angeles Times Kids' Reading Room page.
